How Pranos Fusion’s PRAGYA is Transforming India’s Deep-Tech Landscape

As the world races toward zero-emission energy solutions, nuclear fusion which is the fundamental process that powers the Sun, remains the ultimate frontier in clean energy. Historically, fusion research was dominated by massive, state-funded projects and global consortia. Today, that paradigm is shifting rapidly.

Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup Pranos Fusion has unveiled PRAGYA, India’s first privately developed compact tokamak reactor. Built in just eight months, this low-aspect-ratio tokamak marks a watershed moment for private-sector energy innovation in India.

About Pranos Fusion

Founded in 2024 by Shaurya Kaushal and Roshan George, Pranos Fusion was built to establish India’s footprint in the global nuclear fusion ecosystem. The company operates with support through incubation at premier Indian science centers, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) and the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), along with technical collaborations across IISc, BITS Pilani, and IIT Kharagpur. Pranos also secured a staggering $6.8 million in a funding round co-led by pi Ventures and Ankur Capital, with participation from Industrial47. The company’s philosophy is simple: Take an engineering-first, vertically integrated approach to fusion energy, building the digital, magnetic, and hardware infrastructure simultaneously.

About PRAGYA & The Full-Stack Tokamak Architecture

PRAGYA is a four-foot-tall, low-aspect-ratio, compact tokamak designed as an experimental testbed. Rather than operating as an immediate commercial power station, PRAGYA serves as the physical hardware platform for real-time data collection, plasma control validation, and diagnostic testing.

Integrated Ecosystem Highlights

  • High Shot Volume: Designed to perform 10-12 experimental runs per day (~3,000 runs annually), generating operational datasets to train machine learning models for plasma stabilization.
  • JENGA (Design & Control Software): A digital twin and control platform that optimizes reactor geometry and controls magnetic fields in real time.
  • MAGGA (Magnet Technology): Pranos’ high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet development program engineered to generate intense magnetic confinement fields within compact footprints.
  • Pathway to Net Energy Gain: PRAGYA serves as the learning bed for PraniQ, the company’s full-scale reactor targeted for 2030 to demonstrate net energy gain.

Key Terms Explained

To understand the mechanics behind Pranos Fusion’s technology, here are the essential scientific concepts:

  • Tokamak: A doughnut-shaped magnetic confinement device designed to heat deuterium and tritium gases into plasma and trap them using magnetic fields.
  • Plasma: Known as the “fourth state of matter”, plasma is an ultra-hot, ionized gas consisting of free electrons and positive ions. To achieve fusion, plasma must reach temperatures exceeding 100 million °C.
  • Compact / Low-Aspect-Ratio Tokamak: Traditional tokamaks (like the international ITER project) are massive. A low-aspect-ratio tokamak adopts a spherical shape (resembling a cored apple rather than a wide donut), allowing for stronger magnetic confinement efficiency in a smaller physical footprint.
  • High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Magnets: Magnets capable of operating at higher temperatures than traditional superconductors while producing significantly stronger magnetic fields. Stronger magnetic fields reduce the physical size required for plasma confinement.

What It Means For India

India’s nuclear sector has historically been state-driven. PRAGYA demonstrates that private venture capital can fund and execute high-risk, high-reward hardware development domestically. The passage of the SHANTI Act (2025) signaled the Indian government’s openness to private participation in nuclear energy ecosystems, laying a foundation for startup innovation in clean tech. By developing HTS magnets and diagnostic control software locally, Pranos creates a domestic supply chain for fusion-critical components while training engineers and plasma physicists in India.

The activation of PRAGYA inside a Bengaluru lab signals a key step forward for clean energy technology in India. By pairing compact tokamak engineering with real-time control software and advanced HTS magnets, Pranos Fusion is transforming ambitious physics into viable engineering, positioning India as a key player in the commercial fusion power race.
