Anthropic introduces Rupee Pricing in Major Bid for India’s AI Boom

In a significant move to capture one of the world’s fastest-growing tech ecosystems, US-based AI safety and research company Anthropic has officially rolled out rupee-denominated pricing for its flagship chatbot, Claude, in India.

The strategic update transitions Indian users away from US dollar-billed subscriptions, which previously required international credit cards and caused frequent payment friction due to local banking regulations. By localizing its checkout experience, Anthropic is removing a major barrier for its second-largest market globally.

The newly updated payment structure offers competitive local rates across individual, power-user, and enterprise tiers, with all listed prices fully inclusive of GST.

For individual developers, students, and professionals, the Claude Pro plan is now available at ₹2,000 per month when billed annually. Startups and small businesses looking for higher usage limits can opt for the Claude Team subscription, which begins at ₹2,399 per user per month. For power users and enterprise clients requiring maximum computational bandwidth, the newly introduced Claude Max plan starts at ₹11,999 per month, while the basic free tier remains accessible to the public.

The decision to prioritize local pricing stems directly from a massive surge in user adoption across the subcontinent. India currently accounts for an estimated 5.8% to 7.2% of Claude’s global web traffic, ranking second only to the US.

To support this massive user base of developers and enterprises, Anthropic has aggressively scaled its physical and structural footprint in the country. Earlier this year, the company established its first Indian headquarters in Bengaluru and appointed tech veteran Irina Ghose as Managing Director to handle local operations, foster enterprise partnerships, and lead engineering talent acquisition. This infrastructure push aligns with Anthropic’s evolution beyond simple chat interfaces into developer-centric ecosystems like Claude Code, Cowork, and Design.

This localized pricing shift intensifies an already fierce battle among generative AI giants aiming to capture India’s massive digital workforce. OpenAI previously launched ChatGPT Go, a lower-priced subscription tier that debuted in India alongside rupee-denominated billing for its standard paid plans. Meanwhile, tech-giants like Google and Microsoft continue to expand their footprint through deep local enterprise partnerships, natural language support, and cloud integrations. Even homegrown players are setting a fierce pace, with Indian AI unicorn Sarvam already offering rupee-denominated API pricing that features both a pay-as-you-go option and a ₹10,000 Pro plan.

By removing international banking barriers and aligning its costs with local market dynamics, Anthropic is signaling that Indian tech talent is now a core pillar of its global growth engine.
