Binny Bansal is one of India’s most influential entrepreneurs, best known as the co-founder of Flipkart, the company that transformed online shopping in the country. His journey from a software engineer to a billionaire entrepreneur reflects the power of innovation, perseverance, and strategic thinking. Although his career has witnessed both remarkable success and significant challenges, his contribution to India’s startup ecosystem remains undeniable.
Born in 1982 in Chandigarh, Binny Bansal completed his schooling at St. Anne’s Convent School before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. After graduation, he worked at Sarnoff Corporation and later joined Amazon as a software engineer. The experience he gained in technology and e-commerce inspired him to pursue entrepreneurship.
In 2007, Binny Bansal and his IIT classmate Sachin Bansal co-founded Flipkart, initially selling books online from a small apartment in Bengaluru. Over the years, the company expanded into electronics, fashion, home appliances, and other categories, becoming India’s leading e-commerce platform. Under Binny’s leadership, Flipkart introduced customer-friendly innovations such as Cash on Delivery, the 30-day replacement policy, Big Billion Days, and Flipkart First, which played a key role in building consumer trust and accelerating the growth of online retail.
A major milestone came in 2018 when Walmart acquired a majority stake in Flipkart. However, later that year, Binny resigned as Group CEO following an internal investigation into allegations of personal misconduct. While the investigation found no evidence of financial wrongdoing, the incident marked the end of his leadership at Flipkart.
After leaving the company, Binny shifted his focus to investing in startups and mentoring entrepreneurs. He has backed companies across sectors such as fintech, agritech, artificial intelligence, and education. In 2025, he also launched Opptra, a venture aimed at helping global brands expand across Asian markets.
Binny Bansal’s journey highlights both the opportunities and responsibilities of entrepreneurship. His role in building Flipkart not only reshaped India’s e-commerce industry but also inspired a generation of startup founders, making him one of the defining figures in the country’s digital revolution.
