State-run telecom operator BSNL generated significant buzz on July 9, 2026, by announcing the availability of its new satellite phone, priced at ₹1.34 lakh (inclusive of all taxes). While such a price tag typically buys mainstream smartphone luxuries like pro-grade cameras or a stunning display, this device comes with a completely different tech priority.

As BSNL highlighted on the social media platform X, “When conventional mobile networks can’t reach, the BSNL Satellite Phone keeps you connected. Designed for challenging environments, making it an ideal solution for Defence, Maritime, Disaster Response, Mining, Remote Operations and Adventure Travel.”
Unlike traditional phones that rely heavily on terrestrial cellular towers, this satellite handset establishes a direct connection with satellite constellations orbiting thousands of kilometers above the Earth, operating on networks like Inmarsat. Because of this space-bound communication framework, it works flawlessly in remote and disaster-prone areas where physical telecom infrastructure might be completely non-existent.
The phone’s staggering cost is primarily driven by this specialized internal hardware. Furthermore, unlike commercial flagships that are manufactured by the millions, satellite phones are niche products built in much lower production volumes, which naturally drives up the manufacturing cost per unit.
However, the hardware expense is only the first hurdle. The operational costs are equally premium. BSNL runs the device through its Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) framework. As Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified during a Lok Sabha session on February 11, under the current tariff structures, a commercial user must pay a hefty postpaid minimum subscription starting at ₹5,835 per month (excluding GST) just to receive 30 minutes of talk time. Any additional calls or text messages incur a steep rate of ₹25 each.
Beyond the cost, the legalities are incredibly strict. Under the Telecommunications Act, carrying or operating an unapproved satellite-enabled communication or navigational device in India is a major offense that can result in up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹2 crore . The extreme restrictions surrounding satellite devices trace back primarily to national security concerns, taking a rigid turn after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, where handlers utilized unauthorized satellite links to bypass domestic wiretaps. Because satellite signals communicate directly with space, they completely bypass local mobile towers, creating a difficult tracking blind spot for law enforcement agencies.
Therefore, this phone is strictly made available for authorized commercial and defense use. Any ordinary citizen looking to acquire one cannot simply buy it off a shelf. They must navigate a rigorous government clearance process and seek explicit permissions from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
