At just 14 years old, she invented a solar-powered ironing cart designed to help Indian vendors lead healthier lives while championing environmental conservation.
One day, on her way home from school, Vinisha noticed a local ironing vendor discarding burnt charcoal. This steered her curiosity, prompting her to research the broader impact of charcoal usage. She discovered its harmful effects on human health, frequently causing severe respiratory issues, and was alarmed to learn how charcoal production drives deforestation, requiring millions of trees to be felled annually.
Driven to find a solution, she developed the Solar Ironing Cart , replacing traditional charcoal with clean solar energy. Requiring just five hours of sunlight to fully charge, the cart can operate for six hours straight. Equipped with integrated tabletops and charging points, this innovative design offers vendors a vastly superior, healthier way to earn a living. Notably, Vinisha’s innovation directly contributes to 13 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals .
Vinisha attributes the genesis of her inventive spirit to her childhood, when she frequently received encyclopedias as gifts. Understanding how things work inspired her to build practical solutions. Looking ahead, she aims to scale production to ensure the cart remains affordable across India, with long-term plans to export it to regions in Asia and Africa where sunlight is abundant.
Her groundbreaking work earned her the Youngsters Award at Nico Rosberg’s Greentech Festival , an opportunity to represent India as a baton-bearer in the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay , and a speaking slot at the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative’s World Summit .
“I want to inspire students around the world to take a keen interest in science—to innovate products and solutions that protect our air, water, and land for people, animals, and plants. Our Earth needs its best ‘shots’ to become cleaner and greener—you’re never too young to make a difference,” says the visionary teenager.
