Flipkart is set to enter India’s online food delivery market, marking a major expansion beyond e-commerce. The company is expected to launch its food delivery service through a pilot phase before gradually expanding to more cities. With this move, Flipkart will compete directly with established players such as Zomato and Swiggy.
Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said that entering the market later is not necessarily a disadvantage if a company offers better value and executes its plans effectively. The company aims to leverage its vast customer base, strong logistics network, and expertise in quick commerce to build a competitive food delivery platform.
The initial rollout is expected to begin in Bengaluru, where Flipkart will test the service with a limited number of restaurants and users. Based on customer feedback, the company plans to improve its operations before a wider launch. Reports also suggest that Flipkart may integrate its service with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), allowing it to expand its reach and provide greater flexibility to customers and restaurant partners.
Flipkart’s entry is likely to increase competition in India’s rapidly growing food delivery sector. Consumers could benefit from lower delivery charges, attractive discounts, and improved service quality as companies compete to attract and retain customers. Restaurants may also gain additional business opportunities through another major delivery platform.
However, Flipkart faces significant challenges. Building a reliable delivery workforce, onboarding restaurants, and matching the operational efficiency of Zomato and Swiggy will require substantial investment and careful execution.
Overall, Flipkart’s move reflects its ambition to become a comprehensive digital commerce platform. If the company successfully combines competitive pricing with dependable service, it has the potential to reshape India’s food delivery industry and offer consumers more choices in an increasingly competitive market.
