100 builders. 2 hours. And participants shipping real products, all inside a moving metro. Yes, you read that right. On 18 July 2026, the Codex Community Kochi partnered with the Kochi Metro Rail Limited to organize the world’s first AI build sprint inside a moving metro.
The Codex Nightline featured solo builders aboard the Kochi Metro, running a high-energy route from Vyttila to Thrippunithura and back. With a selective acceptance rate drawing from over 1,000 applicants, only 100 builders made the cut, making every single seat hard-earned and fiercely contested.
Managed from start to finish by Vaisakh Suresh, an OpenAI Codex Ambassador, the sprint challenged participants across four distinct tracks:
- Urban Mobility
- Civic & Community Tools
- Everyday Productivity
- Local Business & Creator Tools
Operating under a strict 2-hour time limit, participants defied conventional hackathon constraints to ship functional, real-world products. Notable innovations launched during the commute included:
- Interactive Teaching Tools designed to revolutionize modern learning.
- Route-Based Waste Assistants to streamline municipal cleanliness and transit logistics.
- Grid-Aware EV Charging Platforms tailored for smarter urban energy consumption.
The grueling overnight schedule tested participant endurance right alongside their coding skills:
- 9:30 PM – 11:00 PM: Check-in, security clearance, and boarding at Vyttila Metro Station.
- 11:00 PM – 1:00 AM: The live onboard AI build sprint inside the moving metro.
- 1:00 AM – 5:00 AM: Deboarding back at Vyttila for submission checks, top-10 lightning demos, judge Q&A, and pre-sunrise winner announcements.
By turning public transit into a high-octane incubator of technology, the Codex Night-line successfully redefined what it means to build on the move.
