OpenAI Unveils Codex Micro, a Dedicated Hardware Controller for AI-Assisted Coding

OpenAI Unveils Codex Micro

OpenAI has launched Codex Micro, a compact hardware controller created in partnership with keyboard maker Work Louder. Built specifically for developers using Codex, the device is designed to streamline AI-assisted programming by providing dedicated physical controls for common coding tasks, reducing the need to switch between multiple applications.

Unlike a conventional keyboard, Codex Micro acts as a programmable control surface. It features 13 customizable mechanical keys, six RGB agent status keys, a planar joystick, a rotary dial, and a touch sensor. Developers can assign these controls to actions such as code reviews, debugging, refactoring, voice interactions, and managing AI-generated suggestions.

The RGB keys display the real-time status of AI agents, while the rotary dial lets users quickly adjust Codex’s reasoning effort. The device supports both macOS and Windows and connects via USB-C or Bluetooth. It also ships with interchangeable Codex-themed keycaps, allowing developers to personalize shortcuts and layouts.

Codex Micro is priced at $230 and is available as a limited-edition collaboration with Work Louder. OpenAI introduced the product with the tagline, “Get yours before stock returns 410,” a playful reference to the HTTP 410 status code, which signifies that a resource is permanently unavailable.

The release represents OpenAI’s first branded hardware product and reflects the company’s broader push toward AI-native developer tools. Rather than replacing existing integrated development environments, Codex Micro is intended to make it easier for programmers to manage and collaborate with multiple AI coding agents through dedicated physical controls.

As AI continues to reshape software development, the introduction of Codex Micro suggests that specialized hardware could become an important part of modern programming workflows, giving developers faster and more intuitive ways to work alongside AI-powered coding assistants.
