PM-WANI Scheme: How to Get 150 Mbps High-Speed Wi-Fi for Just ₹150/Month

If you live in India, you know the drill. You pay ₹800 to ₹1,200 every single month for home broadband, and yet the Wi-Fi cuts out right when you are trying to make a quick UPI payment at the local store.

For millions of shopkeepers, households, and students, good internet is either too expensive or just plain unreliable. With more than 300 million youth needing the internet to learn skills and improve their lives, India needed a better way to connect everyone.

Inspired by European countries that give citizens public Wi-Fi, the government quietly launched a massive project called PM-WANI (Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) to distribute cheap internet all across India without needing expensive business licenses or corporate red tape.
Setting up a spot requires zero paperwork, no GST, and no big investment—just an Aadhaar card, address proof, and a small space at a shop or home.

The entire system runs smoothly through four simple parts working together behind the scenes.

First, any small mom-and-pop shop, cafe, or home can install a Wi-Fi router to become a Public Data Office (PDO), acting as the local internet spot for the neighbourhood. These units are backed by Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs), who handle the network setup, user authentication, and billing systems. To make the network visible, a free mobile App Provider helps citizens scan the area and discover nearby Wi-Fi hotspots, while an official government Central Registry keeps the whole network organized and secure.

Getting online takes less than two minutes for an everyday user. You start by downloading the PM-WANI Hotspot Mobile App on your phone and completing a quick KYC verification profile. Once verified, you open the app map to discover all compliant access points near you. You simply walk up to the spot, connect, and pick a plan from the pop-up screen on your phone. The scheme allows you to buy cheap daily tokens ranging from just ₹2 to ₹20, or you can opt for a full month of 150 Mbps speed for just ₹150. With simple UPI 2.0 integration, activating or renewing your data pack takes a single click.

Ultimately, this project is a powerful, human-scale solution to India’s digital divide. By removing heavy corporate red tape, it allows local shopkeepers to earn a steady supplementary income by sharing a small corner of their space. At the same time, it ensures that students, families, and workers get fast, dependable broadband without breaking the bank, effectively transforming neighbourhood shops into the vital engines of a connected India.
