He who can listen to the music in the midst of noise can achieve great things.” These words belong to one of India’s most pioneering figures, a legendary polymath who inspired generations through his transformative work in science, industry, and space innovation.
We are talking about none other than Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai, who is widely revered as the Father of the Indian Space Programme. He went on to establish some of India’s most significant institutions, directing the nation towards unprecedented scientific self-reliance.
Sarabhai firmly believed that space technology shouldn’t be a luxury to escape life on Earth, but a practical instrument to transform it for the common citizen.
Early Life and Academic Foundations
Born on August 12, 1919, into an affluent industrialist family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Sarabhai studied at the experimental Retreat School established by his parents for their eight children. Equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, a young Sarabhai developed sharp scientific and engineering instincts early in life.
Sarabhai completed his intermediate science examination at Gujarat College in Ahmedabad before moving to England in 1937 to attend the prestigious University of Cambridge. He joined St. John’s College and earned his Tripos in Natural Sciences in 1940.
The outbreak of World War II forced him to return to India before he could finish his advanced research abroad. From 1940 to 1945, he worked at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, conducting extensive research on cosmic rays under the direct mentorship of Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman. During his time at IISc, he developed a deep, lifelong friendship with Dr. Homi J. Bhabha, who would later become the father of India’s nuclear program.
Once World War II ended in 1945, Sarabhai returned to Cambridge to submit his doctoral thesis. In 1947, at just 28 years old, he was awarded his PhD for his groundbreaking work titled “Cosmic Ray Investigations in Tropical Latitudes.”
First Breakthroughs and Institution Building
Immediately after returning to an independent India in 1947, Sarabhai embarked on an unprecedented journey of institution-building that laid the foundation for modern Indian scientific research and industry.
- Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad (1947): Founded in the spare rooms of the M.G. Science Institute, PRL became the cradle of Indian space sciences. Sarabhai expanded it into an international hub for atmospheric research, astrophysics, and cosmic physics.
- Ahmedabad Textile Industry’s Research Association (ATIRA, 1947): Demonstrating his multidisciplinary genius, Sarabhai convinced local mill owners to fund ATIRA. He applied scientific standardization, quality control, and psycho-sociological research to elevate India’s textile manufacturing.
- Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA, 1961): Recognising that scientific progress required world-class organizational leadership, Sarabhai collaborated with industrialist Kasturbhai Lalbhai, psychologist Kamla Chowdhry, and Harvard Business School to establish IIMA, now one of Asia’s elite management institutions.
- Darpana Academy of Performing Arts: Co-founded with his wife, the celebrated classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai, bridging the gap between scientific rationality and cultural heritage.
- Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre (WASCSC): Created to foster scientific temper and inquiry among school students and teachers.
The Birth of India’s Space Ambitions
In 1962, Sarabhai persuaded the Indian government of the crucial need for a national space program. Under the Department of Atomic Energy, he established the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), bringing together a young team of brilliant engineers, including a future President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
The Magic of Thumba
Sarabhai selected Thumba, a quiet fishing village near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, as the launch site because of its proximity to the Earth’s magnetic equator.
With virtually no infrastructure, the early space team converted the St. Mary Magdalene Church into a control room and laboratory, used the bishop’s residence as an office, and transported rocket components on bicycles and bullock carts. On November 21, 1963, India launched its first sounding rocket, a Nike-Apache, signaling the humble yet courageous birth of its space journey.
The Inception of ISRO
On August 15, 1969, INCOSPAR evolved into the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Sarabhai defined ISRO’s ethos with clarity:
“There are some who question the relevance of space activities in a developing nation. To us, there is no ambiguity of purpose… We must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society.”
Space for Social Transformation: The SITE Project
Sarabhai envisioned using satellites for national development. He conceptualised the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in collaboration with NASA. Conducted between 1975 and 1976 across 2,400 villages in six Indian states, SITE used direct broadcast satellite technology to beam educational programming on agriculture, healthcare, family planning, and literacy to remote rural communities.
This monumental initiative earned praise from Arthur C. Clarke as “the greatest communication experiment in history” and laid the blueprint for India’s INSAT satellite series.
Steering National Science and Nuclear Development
Following the tragic death of Dr. Homi Bhabha in a plane crash in 1966, Sarabhai assumed the mantle of Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India.
During his tenure, he pushed for domestic manufacturing capability across all high-tech sectors, establishing key national assets including:
- Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) in Hyderabad (1967)
- Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) in Jaduguda (1967)
- Variable Energy Cyclotron Project in Kolkata
An Untimely Demise and Enduring Legacy
On December 30, 1971, while on an inspection visit to the Kovalam Beach Resort near Thiruvananthapuram after reviewing rocket launches at Thumba, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai passed away suddenly in his sleep at the age of 52.
Though his life was cut tragically short, his vision was already deeply woven into the nation’s fabric.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai proved that a developing country could leapfrog intermediate stages of technology to serve its citizens directly. By creating world-class institutions and daring to look up at the stars from humble beginnings, he built the foundation that eventually carried India to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Recently, NASA sent an invitation to ISRO to join its Moon Programme under the Artemis Accords. This historic partnership, if established, aims to build sustained human presence near the lunar South Pole, standing as a testament to how far India’s space journey, from a small fishing village in Kerala, has reached on the world stage.
