For most college students, unused gadgets, textbooks, headphones, calculators, and other essentials often end up gathering dust in hostel rooms. Selling these items usually means posting in crowded WhatsApp groups, waiting for replies, or accepting prices far below their actual value. Three engineering students believed there had to be a better way, and that idea became Swappr.

ounded by Garvit Dudeja of Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur along with Priyansh Joshi and Lakshay Mangla, Swappr is an AI-powered marketplace built exclusively for college communities. The platform enables students to buy, sell, and swap products with people on their own campuses, making second-hand shopping more accessible while encouraging sustainable consumption.
The startup has already gained traction across nearly 10 colleges in Jaipur and Bhopal, with around 1,700 students using the platform. It also earned national recognition after winning Google’s Fund My Crazy innovation challenge, securing Rs 21 lakh in funding to support its growth.
From Failed Venture to Promising Startup
Before launching Swappr, Garvit and Priyansh experimented with a merchandise business during their early college days. Although the venture showed promise initially, operational setbacks and financial losses eventually forced them to shut it down.
Instead of giving up, the founders looked for problems that students faced every day. One challenge stood out immediately. College students frequently purchase items they later stop using, but finding trustworthy buyers within campus is often difficult. Existing platforms are either too broad or lack the convenience required for student-to-student exchanges.
Recognising this gap, the founders decided to create a marketplace designed specifically around campus life.
Making Buying and Selling Feel Natural
Swappr adopts an interface that feels familiar to today’s students. Rather than browsing through endless classified listings, users simply swipe through available products. When two users express mutual interest, the app creates a match and allows them to connect directly.
The experience is further enhanced through reward points, promotional offers, and discount coupons, making the platform more engaging than traditional resale websites.
By combining elements of online shopping and social discovery, the founders hope to encourage more students to reuse products instead of buying new ones.
Artificial Intelligence Drives the Experience
Artificial intelligence is central to how Swappr operates. During development, the founders relied on Google Gemini AI to evaluate ideas, improve user journeys, and identify potential design issues before building the application. This enabled the team to refine the platform quickly despite limited resources.
Within the app, AI assists users by generating product descriptions, recommending fair selling prices, suggesting relevant listings based on user preferences, and filtering inappropriate or misleading content before it reaches other users.
These features simplify the listing process while helping buyers and sellers make better decisions.
National Recognition from Google
Swappr reached an important milestone in December 2025 when it won Google’s Fund My Crazy campus innovation challenge.
The competition attracted more than 29,000 entries from students across India who were developing solutions using Google Gemini AI. Swappr impressed the judges by addressing a practical problem affecting millions of college students while incorporating AI in meaningful ways.
The Rs 21 lakh funding provided the team with resources to accelerate product development and prepare the platform for expansion into additional campuses.
Addressing Real Marketplace Challenges
Building a swapping platform presented challenges beyond software development.
One of the biggest obstacles involved creating successful exchanges between users whose products differed in value. To overcome this, Swappr introduced a hybrid model that allows students to combine product exchanges with cash payments when necessary.
The platform also faced moderation issues during its early testing phase, as some users uploaded prank listings or unrelated content. AI-powered moderation systems and stricter verification processes were later implemented to maintain a safe and reliable marketplace.
Building Campus Communities
Swappr’s impact extends beyond buying and selling.
Students using the platform have exchanged everything from books and electronics to clothing and accessories, while many have also connected with classmates who share similar interests. Inspired by these interactions, the founders are exploring dedicated “Swap Zones” where students can meet safely to complete exchanges and interact in person.
The goal is to transform the platform into a community-driven ecosystem rather than simply another resale application.
Supporting Sustainable Living
Every product exchanged through Swappr represents one less item that needs to be manufactured, packaged, and transported.
The founders believe extending the life of existing products can significantly reduce waste while helping students save money. They are also exploring methods to measure the environmental benefits created through product exchanges, with future plans that may include carbon impact tracking.
By encouraging reuse instead of replacement, Swappr aligns with the growing interest among young consumers in sustainable lifestyles.
Looking Ahead
What started as an idea discussed between friends has evolved into a fast-growing student startup with national recognition. As Swappr prepares to expand to more educational institutions, its founders remain focused on improving AI-powered recommendations, strengthening trust and safety, and making campus commerce simpler and more affordable.
Their journey demonstrates that meaningful innovation often begins by solving everyday problems. In the case of Swappr, a simple observation about unused hostel belongings has grown into a technology platform that could reshape how students exchange goods across India’s campuses.
