In a massive update released on July 28, 2026, WhatsApp has released a bunch of powerful calling features that redefine how users connect across devices. Headlining this update is the long-awaited introduction of browser-based calling, making WhatsApp far more flexible for desktop and laptop users.
Web Calling : Make Calls Directly From Your Browser
For the first time ever, users can now make and receive both one-on-one and group, audio and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, completely eliminating the need to download a separate desktop application. Users get access to all the features including screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated call history displaying all their favourites.
True to WhatsApp’s core architecture, these calls are end-to-end encrypted with no time limit and are completely free of cost!
Call Transfer
Users can now seamlessly move an active call from one device to another, without hanging up. This enables people to switch modes based on the comfort of their surroundings.
Waiting Room
To give hosts better control during group calls, WhatsApp has introduced the concept of Waiting Rooms. So, whenever someone creates a call link with “Require approval to join” setting enabled, participants are placed into a holding area until the host explicitly admits them.
QuickHD
No more waiting for video quality to ramp up slowly. The new QuickHD feature ensures that high-definition video streaming kicks in within the first few seconds of starting a video call, drastically cutting down initial pixelation and lag.
Noise Suppression
This built-in tool actively filters out background noise so that the user’s voice comes out clearer, even in loud and busy environments.
The features are rolling out gradually and will become available to all global users over the coming weeks.
However, these cross-platform upgrades significantly elevate the user experience, cementing WhatsApp’s reputation as a masterclass in messaging and communication technology.
